Ran into this problem about 12 years ago, and Microsoft's instructions were to repair the font database in Word's preference files.

I deleted my normal.dotm template, but Word did the same thing with a brand new Normal.dotm, so template corruption does not appear to be the issue.

It only does this in Word.Д«ecause of the nature of my work, I have a large number of fonts loaded on my system - but Word acted perfectly normally yesterday. I can change fonts in Publisher, Outlook, and PowerPoint. None of my other Office 2016 Pro applications do this.
